Back to School Shop, Inc., a local all-volunteer non-profit organization held its ninth annual event on Sunday, July 30, at Davenport Ridge Elementary School in Stamford. Nearly 370 children from Stamford Elementary Schools, identified and pre-registered by their school social workers, were able to “shop” free of charge for brand new back-to-school clothing and school supplies in a pop-up shop created just for them.
Remember the excitement of shopping for back to school supplies? Well, imagine the reactions of over 400 children from low-income families who get to select their own brand new school items in a one day pop-up shop where everything is free!
Back to School Shop, an all-volunteer community organization, welcomed 350 of Stamford’s disadvantaged elementary students into their eighth annual event on Sunday, August 7. The children, who were identified and registered for the event by Stamford elementary school social workers, were able to “shop” free of charge for brand new school clothes and supplies in the pop-up store which the organization created for them at Davenport Ridge Elementary School.
Nearly 400 Stamford elementary school children are expected to shop by appointment for brand new school clothes and supplies on Aug. 7. The organization is celebrating its eighth annual event with a return to their in-person pop-up shop, after two years of COVID-19 necessitated drive-through events. The event will be held on Aug. 7 at Davenport Ridge Elementary School.
Back to School Shop, Inc., an all-volunteer community organization, held its seventh annual event on Sunday, July 25 at Davenport Ridge Elementary School in Stamford. Nearly 450 children in need from the Stamford public elementary schools were preregistered by their school social workers to participate in the event. Families drove through the parking lot at appointed times to take delivery of backpacks filled with school supplies, toiletries, hand knit hats, gloves, underwear, socks, a sweatshirt, and a book. In addition, the parents received a $100 gift card for each child to enable them to purchase needed clothing for school.
Back to School Shop, the all-volunteer community organization devoted to providing economically disadvantaged elementary school students with clothing & supplies is back! Rising elementary students and their parents, selected for participation by social workers in the Stamford elementary schools, are marking Sunday, July 25th, 2021, on their calendars for the Davenport Ridge Elementary School event. The event will be a drive-through format again this year, out of concern for the safety of the young participants who are below the vaccination age.
When Back to School Shop holds its 7th annual event on July 25th, 450 children and their families will drive through the parking lot of Davenport Ridge Elementary School to collect items they'll need to go back to school next year. The children, who are chosen and pre-registered by elementary school social workers, will receive a backpack, school supplies, books, toiletries, socks, underwear, a sweatshirt and a generous gift card to help them complete their back-to-school shopping. And this year, thanks to an army of volunteer knitters and crocheters, each child will be able to select a hand-made winter hat.

Parents of nearly 350 children from the Stamford public elementary schools, who had been registered in advance by their school social workers, drove through the parking lot at appointed times to take delivery of backpacks full of school supplies, toiletries, hat, gloves, and a book. Parents were also given a $100 Target gift card for each child, to help them finish their back to school shopping. Families whose children were registered but not able to make it to the school on Sunday will have their items delivered to their elementary school for them.

More than 360 children from the Stamford public elementary schools got new back-to-school outfits and school supplies in a department store-like setting, with the help of volunteer “personal shoppers.” Nearly 250 volunteers from the community helped out at the event.
Back To School Shop, a community event organized to provide new school clothes and supplies to economically disadvantaged elementary school children, will celebrate its 5th anniversary at its annual event on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at Davenport Ridge Elementary School in Stamford. To mark the occasion there will be some special treats in store for children and volunteers alike, and 5-year donors and volunteers will be recognized. "We are so proud of what we have been able to accomplish these past 5 years, as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization," said Co-Founder Meryl Japha. "At our first event we served 125 children. This year we are expecting to serve 350!"
The children of the JCC Sara Walker Nursery School in Stamford, ranging in age from two to four years old, have chosen to donate the money they collected throughout the school year to the local non-profit, Back to School Shop, Inc. Each week the nursery children bring a donation ("tzedakah") to school, and with the help of their teachers they decide where they would like their accumulated donations to go. Since the inception of Back to School Shop, the children have often chosen the organization as a beneficiary of their charitable giving.
