STAMFORD - A nonprofit organization hosted its fifth annual back-to-school shopping spree Sunday where economically disadvantaged students can shop for free. The event takes place once a year before school starts, but the organization Back to School Shop works year-round to make purchases and gather volunteers. All monetary donations go straight to buying the kids brand new clothes and school supplies.

Back To School Shop, a community event organized to provide new school clothes and supplies to economically disadvantaged elementary school children, will celebrate its 5th anniversary at its annual event on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at Davenport Ridge Elementary School in Stamford. To mark the occasion there will be some special treats in store for children and volunteers alike, and 5-year donors and volunteers will be recognized. "We are so proud of what we have been able to accomplish these past 5 years, as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization," said Co-Founder Meryl Japha. "At our first event we served 125 children. This year we are expecting to serve 350!"

Nursery School Children Donate to Help Local Children in Need

The children of the JCC Sara Walker Nursery School in Stamford, ranging in age from two to four years old, have chosen to donate the money they collected throughout the school year to the local non-profit, Back to School Shop, Inc. Each week the nursery children bring a donation ("tzedakah") to school, and with the help of their teachers they decide where they would like their accumulated donations to go. Since the inception of Back to School Shop, the children have often chosen the organization as a beneficiary of their charitable giving.
